Whisper Chain
Artist Statement:
Face to face interaction is practically unnecessary given the state of technology and social media today. Letter writing, in-person meetings, even speech itself, are fast becoming obsolete forms of communication.
Perhaps we have lost something during our technological growth, which now makes talking to another person uncomfortable. When we do speak to one another, we censor ourselves without even realizing it; we edit what we say in fear of judgment by others.
In collaboration with my brother Phinehas, I created Whisper Chain as an attempt to confront the awkward transition between spoken and technological communication. The piece creates a means for honest and anonymous sharing of messages with other human beings, albeit via a computer. Please leave a message with the sculpture, a secret, or an idea and in return hear what a stranger left for you. Embrace the strangeness of sharing with another human being, with someone you may not know and or ever meet. Take the opportunity to connect.
